The relationship between trauma and clinical outcome variables among older adults with schizophrenia spectrum disorders

We found that the schizophrenia group not only differed on the overall level of sexual and physical abuse, but also on the prevalence of sexual abuse before the age of 17; however, the level of early physical abuse did not attain statistical significance (p = 0.06). These findings are consistent with the literature on the potential role that early abuse plays in schizophrenia.1 Moreover, unlike other traumas that were significant between groups, it suggests a unidirectional relationship in persons with schizophrenia, that is, abuse preceding schizophrenia.
